Buying Property in Crete - Pay Property Purchase Tax
The tax to be paid on Crete property is between 9% and 13% of the contract value, unless the property has previously changed hands after 1 January 2006, in which case the tax rate is 1%. The Notary completes the necessary forms.
Armed with all the Notary's tax calculation papers and the form that has to be completed, the day before the contract signing we go to the responsible tax office, which is determined by where the property is located.
The tax officer checks the Notary's calculations and enters the details into the computer system. They then print a payment demand which is taken to the cashier. The tax is either paid in cash or by bank draft and a receipt issued.
The papers that are returned by the tax office are taken back to the Notary so that she can record them in the contract and they are added to the contract file.
